8.6 Bond Market Indices (Debt Indices)
While stock market indices occupy the vast majority of financial media coverage and investor attention, bond market indices are equally essential to the global financial architecture. Investors often exhibit a limited understanding of the growing number of fixed-income benchmarks. However, bond indices serve the exact same critical functions for debt markets that equity indices perform for stock markets—acting as market barometers, benchmarks for active managers, model portfolios for passive funds, and tools for measuring systematic risk.
The Unique Challenges of Constructing Bond Indices
Designing and maintaining a bond index is significantly more complex than constructing an equity index due to several structural characteristics of fixed-income markets:
- Vast and Broad Universe: The physical size and breadth of the bond market are much larger than the equity market.
- Multiple Securities per Issuer: In equity markets, a corporation typically has only one class of common stock outstanding (or occasionally a second class of DVR shares). In contrast, a single government or corporate entity can have dozens or even hundreds of distinct bond issuances outstanding at any given time. NIFTY G-Sec Index Construction Methodology

T-Bill Index Selection Rules:
- For the 91-day, 182-day, and 1-year indices, the most recently auctioned T-Bill is automatically selected as the sole index constituent.
- For the 30-day and 60-day indices, the outstanding T-Bill whose remaining residual maturity is closest to 30 or 60 days, respectively, is selected.
8.6.2 Corporate Bond Indices
Corporate bond indices are engineered to track the performance of taxable, private-sector debt securities issued by corporates, financial institutions, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
Because credit risk is a vital pricing factor in corporate debt, these indices are segregated by both Macaulay Duration and Credit Rating segments. The primary rating categories tracked in the Indian market include AAA, AA+, AA, and AA-.
NIFTY AAA and AA Rated Bond Indices

The NIFTY Fixed Income Aggregate Series consists of 13 indices that blend various proportions of Government securities, corporate bonds of different rating categories, Commercial Papers (CPs), Certificates of Deposit (CDs), Treasury Bills, and overnight lending rates.
8.6.3 High-Yield and Global Bond Indices
High-Yield Bond Indices
High-yield bonds (commonly referred to as "sub-investment grade" or speculative-grade debt) consist of bonds rated below BBB- (or equivalent). The Rebalancing and Weight-Drift Mechanism
When managing a composite index, index providers must establish rules to handle weight drift. Because equity prices and bond prices move independently, the actual weights of the sub-indices will drift away from their target allocations daily.
